Dr Meena Gopal is Associate Professor at the Centre for Women’s Studies. Prior to this she has taught at the Advanced Centre for Women’s Studies at TISS, Mumbai from 2012 to 2023 (11 years), and at the Research Centre for Women’s Studies, SNDT Women’s University from 1999 to 2011 (12 years). Her areas of interest in research and teaching include: gender and labour, bodily cultures; sports studies, political economy of health, welfare and development; sexuality studies and social movements. She has written and published on themes of women in the worlds of labour, sports studies in India, gender migration and labour; home based industry in south Tamil Nadu; queer and feminist politics; intersectionality; social reproduction. She has completed nearly 22 projects and has around 60 publications in both Indian and international journals, as book chapters, web resources, and other publications. In 2006, she was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar-in-Residence at Trinity College in Connecticut, US. She was also a Fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library doing her post-doctoral work in 2009-11 at New Delhi. In 2018, she was a Visiting Fellow in Contemporary India at the University of Sydney, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She is active in feminist collectives for gender and queer rights in western India. She was also a former Inter-University athletic record holder in heptathlon for women. She continues the engagement with academics and activism, while also pursuing and sharing sporting interests.
