The current pattern of man’s efforts for development while producing economic gains has brought severe damage to natural eco-systems. The natural resources of the earth such as water, air, soil, plants and animals, which are the basis of our very existence, are being degraded because of development activities that are not in harmony with the environment. There is, therefore, urgent need to restore the ecological integrity of ecosystems; to develop and implement ecologically sound habitats and wildlife restoration; and to inculcate enduring attitudes and values of respect for the natural environment in all people. There is major need to mobilise human resources and to help shape the knowledge, skills and values of future citizens. Further, nowadays there are varying pressures on the natural resources, wildlife and environment, the understanding of ecology and environmental sciences are of immense importance to guide actions and policy, particularly where there is a trade-off in resource allocation between conservation and development. The policy requires the concurrence of ecology and environmental experts before any development project is given a green signal. In this context, Pondicherry University has started this department to fill these knowledge gaps in the country.
Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences is one of the oldest departments of the University and started as ‘School of Ecology’ on 1st July, 1987 and later it was renamed as the ‘Salim Ali School of Ecology’ and started offering M.S. Ecology, which was the first M.S. Ecology Programme in India. Later, the School was converted into a department and merged with ‘School of Life Sciences’ with other life science departments. Now, the Department offer two Post-Graduate Programs and a Ph.D Programme. Further, the Department is coordinating the Post-Graduate Diploma and Ph.D programs of the affiliated institution such as the Zoological Survey of India.
Objectives
The major objective of this Department is to provide interdisciplinary high quality education to students in order to deepen their understanding of contemporary ecological and environmental issues. Curricula of MSc Ecology and MSc Environmental Sciences courses have been meticulously developed and implemented to address the pressing local, national, regional, and global developmental needs. These programs are designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and expertise to tackle the complex challenges faced by our environment and contribute to sustainable development.
Moreover, the MSc Ecology and MSc Environmental Sciences programs prioritize the development of critical skills such as data analysis, modelling, communication, and teamwork. These skills are essential for effective collaboration and engagement with stakeholders, policymakers, and the public. By cultivating these abilities, students are equipped to become competent professionals who can bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and practical application, thereby contributing to the development and implementation of sustainable environmental strategies.
Vision and Mission
The department’s vision is to become a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in ecological research, environmental education, and sustainable solutions. This vision reflects the department’s aspiration to contribute significantly to the understanding and conservation of ecosystems and wildlife, the promotion of environmental stewardship, and the development of innovative approaches to address environmental challenges. By cultivating a culture of excellence, collaboration, and engagement, the department aims to produce graduates who are well equipped to make meaningful contributions to the field of ecology and environmental sciences.
Aligned with its vision, the department’s mission is to provide a rigorous and comprehensive education in ecology and environmental sciences, foster cutting-edge research and innovation, and promote environmental sustainability through partnerships and outreach. The department is committed to nurturing a learning environment that emphasizes critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and interdisciplinary approaches. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills, the department prepares students to address complex ecological and environmental issues effectively.
