Established in 1986, the Department of Mathematics is dedicated to fostering advanced research and teaching in Mathematics. It offers a four-year B.Sc. (Honours) in Mathematics, a two-year M.Sc. Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Mathematics, catering to a large number of undergraduate, and postgraduate students and research scholars annually. The M.Sc. curriculum provides a strong foundation in core areas of mathematics, covering pure Mathematics topics such as Algebra, Real and Complex Analysis, Topology, etc. and Applied Mathematics topics such as Differential Equations, Special Functions, Number Theory, etc. to name a few. A wide range of elective courses allows students to specialize in advanced topics across Pure and Applied Mathematics.
The department employs diverse teaching methodologies, combining traditional chalk-and-board instruction with tutorials, presentations, group discussions, and expert lectures. A structured program committee monitors the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process. Faculty members are actively involved in curriculum development and teaching plans for undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics courses across affiliated colleges of Pondicherry University.
The department has received substantial extramural funding from various government agencies. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, supported infrastructure development under the FIST program for the period 2009–14. Additionally, the University Grants Commission (UGC) Special Assistance Program (SAP) provided funding under DRS-I during 2009–14 and DRS-II during 2015–20 funding to enhance teaching and research capabilities. The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) also supported the department through library grants for mathematics resources in the form of books and Lecture notes.
Currently, the Department has received financial support amounting to Rs. 1,12,00,000 (1 crore, 12 lakhs rupees only) by the DST-FIST (Level B) for the period 2024–29.
The department fosters an active research environment through an IT-enabled, well-equipped Computer Lab, providing a conducive atmosphere for research and other academic activities. faculties specialize in diverse mathematical fields and maintain global research collaborations engaging with international universities to promote interdisciplinary research in mathematics. Some hold national and international research projects funded by agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST-SERB, and ANRF. Between 2019 and 2024, faculty members have published over 100 research papers in Scopus, Web of Science, and UGC-listed journals, with 60% of publications indexed in SCIE journals.
The Department of Mathematics remains committed to advancing mathematical knowledge through high-impact research, academic excellence, and innovative teaching methodologies, strengthening its position as a center for higher learning in mathematical sciences.
