About the Department

The Department of Physics came into existence in June 1987. The Department offers postgraduate programmes and conducts research in frontier areas of Physics and Material Science. The Department has been recognized for special funding by DST under the Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure (FIST-Level II) and also UGC-SAP DRS-II Programmes. The faculty members have obtained major research grants exceeding Rs 25 crores from different funding agencies such as DST, AICTE, UGC, IFCPAR, NBHM, DRDO, DAE, INSA, CSIR and NAB. The research activities have resulted in publication of more than 800 research papers in peer-reviewed journals including 9 patents. The members of the faculty are accorded with several national and international awards, fellow of the national academies, members in the national and international scientific advisory committees, referees of many national and international journals. Our faculty members are involved in collaborative research projects with leading scientists in various laboratories and also with Industries in India and abroad.

Develop the resources to accept up the challenges of the science and society and provide a meaningful and sustainable solution encompassing the ever expanding frontiers of Physical Sciences and be a hub of knowledge seekers

Mission:

1. To provide the state of the art research facilities to push the boundaries of knowledge

2. To provide a platform to all the stake holders, an intellectually stimulating ambience to engage in scientific value based education, and be the torch bearers through rigorous academic curriculum and adapting methodologies to appreciate the spirit of discovery and further their curiosity.

3. To develop a scientific workforce who are driven by passion and has the capability to address the problems of mankind.

We at Department of Physics have been engaging in scientific research in diverse area bordering on exploring the fundamentals as well as finding applications through interdisciplinary research. Ever since it inception we have been imparting the knowledge through its constantly updated course syllabus to keep abreast with the international standards. Through nearly four decades of our existence we have been able to setup the start of the research facilities in areas related to Energy Science, Plasma science and technology for Greener technologies, Nano science, Spintronics, Multi-ferroics, Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics , Computational Materials Science and Electromagnetics, Magneto-hydrodynamics, developing novel materials and compositions for electronic, photonic and magnetic applications, Astrophysics etc. Several of our colleagues through their uncompromising approach in pursuit of research excellence have found mention and recognition in the national and international forums for their significant contribution. While others have made a mark with their innovative approach in imparting scientific training both in the teaching laboratories and classroom. The ambience in the department ensures that all the students and scholars achieve their goals and are ready for taking up the next challenge. We believe in philosophy that being a Physicist is not limited to pursing a career in Physics subject but it is a way of thinking. Once a Physicist will always remains a physicist as the approach develop will prepare a person to address the challenges in any kind of profession they chooses later on. We welcome all those who would like to partner with us in our endeavor to use science in nation building and addressing the global challenges.

Teaching and Research facilities in the Department ofPhysics: Powder X-ray diffractometer (PAN ANALYTIC XPERT), AFM/STM (BRUKER MULTIMODE 8), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (SETARA LABSYS), VSM,FTIR (Shimadzu 8700 Spectrophotometer), DC magnetron sputtering system (Hind-Hivac), Impedance analyzer – 30 to 40 MHz (NOVOCONTROL), Hioki LCR mater with cryostat (80 K to 400 K), Particle size analyser, Surface Area Analyser, Glove box-VAC-USA,Battery cycle tester, Susceptibility meter (Bartington England), High temperature furnaces, Spinner magnetometer (Molspin England), Multifrequency Ultrasonic Interferometer, Laser based experiments, Computer laboratory, High End Computing Cluster, Nd-YAG and Titanium Sapphire Laser.The advanced research facilities accessible to Department of Physics are available in the Central Instrumentation Facility, www.pondiuni.edu.in/cif.

Achievements

Placement & Internships

The students of the Department were placed in leading scientific laboratories as well as in MNCs. Our students have been successful in the national level examinations viz., GATE / CSIR-UGC resulting in research placements in India and abroad. Research seminarsare periodically organized by involving eminent Indian and foreign scientists. Department conducted several International/National level conferences/ seminars / workshops to encourage research activities in the University. For empowering students and show causing their talents, programs such as Research scholar seminars, Reflections are organised for the scholars/students of Department of Physics.
