Dr. K. M. Kumar is a distinguished academician and researcher in Bioinformatics, with a strong focus on computational biology, genome data science, drug/vaccine design, and AI in drug discovery. He holds a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from VIT University, Vellore, India, and has a comprehensive academic background, including a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from KMG College, Vellore, M.Sc. in Bioinformatics from Thiruvalluar University, Vellore, and an M.Phil. in Bioinformatics from Bharathidhasan University, Trichy. Dr. Kumar currently serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Bioinformatics, Pondicherry Central University, and has held teaching positions at institutions like Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, REVA University, and VIT University. He is also a Visiting Professor at Management and Science University, Shah Alam, Malaysia. His research focuses on microbial genome informatics, AI in drug discovery, machine learning for drug response in cancer, whole genome analysis of cancer datasets, SNP variant calling, de novo vaccine design, and antibiotics resistance, particularly in the context of emerging microbial infections and cancer therapy.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kumar has guided several undergraduate, postgraduate, and the Ph.D. students, earning recognition for his mentorship. He has successfully led research projects funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Dr. Kumar has authored over 36 research papers in prestigious journals and contributed to books and special issues on computational drug discovery. His research on antiviral compounds, cancer therapies, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms has been instrumental in advancing molecular interaction and therapeutic strategies.
Dr. Kumar has been recognized for his contributions with several awards, including the “Outstanding Young Researcher Award 2019” from Biomedical Research Unit and Lab Centre (BRULAC), Dental Research cell (DRC), Saveetha Dental college & Hospital, SIMATS, Chennai, India and Innoscience Scientific Research Institute Malaysia, the “Research Award 2014” from VIT University, Vellore, the “Indian Indigenous Best Innovation Award in Bioinformatics,” and the “Proud Alumni Award” in 2023. He has held various leadership roles, including NBA, NAAC & UGC Coordinator at the Department level, and served as a selection committee member, resource person, program chair, and invited speaker at national and international conferences and workshops, including the ATAL FDP organized by AICTE, Government of India. Additionally, Dr. Kumar serves on editorial boards for several high-impact international journals, including Virology from Frontiers in Microbiology. His dedication to research excellence is evident in his ongoing contributions to the field of Bioinformatics, both in academia and global research collaborations. As a mentor, educator, and researcher, Dr. Kumar continues to inspire students and colleagues and plays a significant role in shaping the future of Bioinformatics and its application in biomedical research.
