Dr. K. Srinivasamoorthy

About
Research Area

A Professor of Earth Sciences, Pondicherry University, with more than two decades of experience in Groundwater Resources: Assessment & Management. His career as a professional, balances advanced geochemical techniques with sustainable assessment of water resources by developing innovative water management strategies.

He has established a hydrogeology laboratory at the Department of Earth Sciences for cutting-edge research and practical applications that support water resource research. He also offers hands-on training for M.Sc., M.Tech, and doctoral scholars.

With over 117 research articles, book chapters, and conference papers published in high-impact, SCI/SCOPUS-indexed International Journals, his work has added significance for scientific understanding of groundwater behavior and regulation processes, as testified by more than 3,700 citations, along with an H-index of 31 and an i10-index of 45. Prof. Moorthy has been an Associate Editor for prominent Earth sciences and Water resources journals. He has also served as an honorary advisor for VRV Consultants Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, on a water management project for three years. He also reviews research proposals for major Indian funding bodies such as DST, SERB, and UGC. He contributes to academic governance through involvement in Research Degrees Committees, Boards of Studies, and other technical committees.

Beyond academia and administration, he has led several high-impact projects funded by key national agencies. Completed initiatives include comprehensive studies on groundwater recharge delineation, aquifer vulnerability assessments, and innovative water quality monitoring techniques projects executed in collaboration with agencies such as the Department of Science & Technology (DST), UGC, National Centre for Earth Sciences Studies for Ministry of Earth Sciences, he has currently ongoing projects supported by World Bank, National Hydrology Project under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. using advanced geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and machine learning to refine predictive models for groundwater sustainability amid the challenges posed by climate change.

He serves as co-ordinator for SDG-6 and 14 at Pondicherry University, is actively involved with the Pondicherry Groundwater Authority, and is the Chairman of the State Level Expert Appraisal Committee for the Government of Puducherry. His research delves into the complex interactions between climate change and subsurface hydrology. It examines key phenomena such as saline water intrusion, submarine groundwater discharge, and shifting coastal dynamics. By harnessing state-of-the-art techniques, including resistivity imaging, advanced groundwater flow modeling, and the analysis of rare earth elements (REEs), his work is driving the development of innovative remediation strategies to tackle water quality challenges. Ultimately, this research seeks to transform conventional hydrogeological methods into scalable, sustainable solutions for effective water resource management in an era of rapid environmental change.
